Steps You Can Take Today to Get Listed in Web Directories:

1.  Write a website title – Generally speaking the title you use should be the title of your website. The title should include the primary keyword(s) you want to rank well for on the search engines. You should also include a value statement that will  increase the likelihood that humans will want to click on your website. So, for  example, if you want to rank well for the term “magazine subscriptions”, you might consider a title such as, “Magazine Subscriptions for Less”.

2.  Write a site description – This description needs to be short, and that means 15-25 words or so. It needs to be short enough that someone who is quickly scanning the directory results can easily understand why your site is relevant to them. Don’t get complex, but build off your value statement you created in the title. So, for the magazine subscription example you might say, “Get instant discounts up to 50% off the cover price of your favorite magazines and periodicals.”
3.  Visit www.profitchoice.com/webdir – List your website in ProfitChoice’s web directory. Our Directory is scanned by the “Big Three” regularly, so your site will be picked up pretty quickly. You can also upgrade your listing on our site to make sure it gets listed at the top of its category. Listings at the top of the category pages generally receive a higher benefit than those further down.
4.  Submit your site to other directories – The Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org) is generally regarded as the single most important directory on the Internet. However, because of its popularity it can take months or even years to get listed. Hopefully by now you realize the importance of listing your website with Web Directories. There are far more directories out there on the Internet, and some are focused just on your industry. I have found that submitting my sites to directories is a somewhat tedious process, but it is also very rewarding when I find a quality directory that takes my submissions.

Web directories are good for your site in two ways.

You can get traffic from them - the more popular directories, such as Yahoo Directory and Open Directory Project, get millions of visitors per month. If you are listed there, then chances are some of that traffic will come your way.
Search Engines use directories to find new sites - Human edited directories such as the one on ProfitChoice.com and Yahoo are highly regarded by search engines because a human being has actually reviewed all the sites. Because a human being has reviewed each site, the big search engines can be pretty sure the sites are high quality, and they belong in the categories in which they are listed.

The Biggest Problem is Time

One of the biggest problems with starting up a new website is the time that is required to get the search engines to index the site, and then to actually rank it.
The “Big Three” search engines (Google, MSN, and Yahoo) all have a delay between when they “discover” your website, and when they actually list it in their indexes. On Google, this delay is known as the “sandbox” effect, but the others have similar delay algorithms. The delay can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months just to get listed in the index. In fact, ranking well on Google for highly competitive terms can take over a year. Therefore, the sooner you get the process started, the sooner you will start to see results.
I always recommend to my clients that they not wait until their website is “finished” to go ahead and roll it live. It is far better to get the basic skeleton of the site online, and then add content and build out the sections while you wait for the search engines to get to know you. In general, I build the first five pages of a website (Home page, Main Product page, Secondary Product Page, About Us page, and a Content Page), roll it live, and submit it to directories before I do anything else.
Paid Directories
There are also paid directories out there that you might consider using. While I would focus my initial efforts on the free directories, you might consider taking a look at Yahoo. Yahoo is one of the most important (and at $300/year it is also one of the most expensive) web directories. You can access Yahoo’s directory here: dir.yahoo.com. Most paid directories charge $10 - $50 per year for inclusion. 

Yahoo’s directory is well-regarded by many search engines, so listing your website there for the first year will make your site more likely to get listed in the major search engines. Once you have been included in the major Search Engines, you might consider using the budget from Yahoo to spend on other directories to increase the number of sites linking to you (this is good for the search engine optimization work that you will do on day 3).

If you really don’t have any money to spend on directory listings, then don’t worry too much about it. You can concentrate on the free directories, and you will eventually get picked up by the major search engines anyway.

List Your Website with Free Web Directories

Too often I see entrepreneurs focusing on the wrong priorities when addressing their website businesses. They spend a lot of time and money building a website, and then they immediately turn their attention to how to drive as many visitors into the website as possible. They start testing PPC and banner ads, they sponsor newsletters, they go on message boards, and some even run print and broadcast advertising. 

The problem they have is that they skipped vital steps in the development process and didn’t prioritize their activities correctly. This is a problem you will not have because you are taking the right steps now to learn about how to prioritize your activities to make your website more successful.

To be sure, many of these activities are not going to be complete by the time you knock off for the evening each day. List Your Website with Free Web Directories

Although many people confuse the two, web directories are very different from search engines. To briefly explain the difference, a web directory is a listing of websites that are categorized by site type. Visitors to the directory can “drill-down” through a hierarchy of categories to find the specific type of site they are looking for.

Let’s say you are on Yahoo’s web directory, and you are looking for websites with information on photography. You would go to the Yahoo Directory Homepage (dir.yahoo.com) and click on the “Arts & Humanities” category. You would then click on the “Visual Arts” sub-category, and then you would click on the “Photography” sub-category. Notice that as you move down the hierarchy, the selections become more specific to the niche site you are looking for. Human beings find the category that is most appropriate for the site and list the site under that category.

Search engines are different. A search engine is really a computer program that “crawls” the web. Each time it stumbles across a hyperlink on a site, it follows that link to discover what content is on the resulting page. By “crawling” pages in this way, search engines build up a database called an “index” that holds information about each page the search engine (or spider) has found during its crawl. When you type a search query into Google, you are essentially asking that program to tell you all the sites that pertain to your search term.

The trick for new site owners is to get the search engines to crawl your site. The best way to do this is with web directories.
